20 Years of Hotels as Conference Venues 1996- 2016

20 YEARS OF HOTELS

'Canon Lawyers from all over Britain and Ireland gathered in Renfrew for their annual Conference' begins the article published in the June 1996 edition of Flourish.

As is the norm each year at our annual conferences of the Society, the year 1996 hosted over 100 members of the Canon Law Society of Great Britain and Ireland gathered from around the world, including USA, Australia, Canada and from Africa.  The five day event held in 1996 from Monday 20 to Friday 24 May was however both an exceptional and historic first for the Society in its then 39th year history. This was the first time since the Society's foundation in 1957 that a hotel was chosen as a venue for the annual conference.

This first of many Hotels took place at the then Dean Park Hotel, Renfrew. It was also the first time in many years that the Society had come to Scotland and in welcoming the Society Bishop Mone said;  "I hope we do not have to wait too long before you return to Scotland again".  Unbeknown to Bishop Mone the Executive Committee had decided the Society should make efforts to host the annual conference in each jurisdiction of the three episcopal conferences which make up the Canon Law Society of Great Britain and Ireland: the episcopal jurisdictions of England & Wales, Ireland and Scotland.

Over the past 20 years the Society has held its annual conferences all over Great Britain and Ireland, including Killarney, Cardiff, Sligo, Edinburgh, Derry, Aviemore, Harrogate, Gateshead and Galway. Owing to the success of hotel venues, the Society has returned more than once to the same hotel. The annual conference, marking the Golden Jubilee of the Society, was held in Rome.  In 2017, the Society will celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Society and will return to Rome to host its annual conference. It will be an opportunity for the Society to commemorate the centenary of the 1917 Pio-Benedictine Code.
